ELSE JANSSEN (LIE)

ELSE JANSSEN (nee LIE) Peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2001, Else passed away at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre at the age of 94 years. Else was born on December 20, 1906, in Oslo, Norway, to Torval and Augusta (Anderson) Lie. She emigrated to Canada in March 1928, and was employed for a time at Victoria Hospital. Else and Kurt Janssen were married in the Norwegian Baptist Church, Winnipeg, on May 24, 1936. Kurt died suddenly on July 1, 1960 while on a visit to family in Germany. Else was a long-time member of the Scandinavian Centre in Winnipeg and a strong supporter of the Norwegian Canadian Club. She loved music and enjoyed playing cards with her friends and attending special dinners and celebrations. Her church was very important to her and she rarely missed a Sunday service until she experienced two hip replacements. She contributed generously to the installation of elevators in both the Scandinavian Centre on Erin Street and at Our Saviours Lutheran Church. Else was a resident of Lions Place for some years. Our thanks to all the loving care givers at Golden Door where Else was at home for 3 years. Besides her parents, Else was predeceased by her four brothers, Trygve and Torleif Lie in Norway and Haakon and Bjarne Lie in Canada and by her sisters, Ruth Fromm and Petra Anderson in Canada - and all their spouses. If friends desire, donations may be made in her memory to two of her favourite charities; the Alzheimers Society and the Salvation Army, or to the Scandinavian Centre or Our Saviours Lutheran Church. A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Else Janssen will be held at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, 600 Minto St., at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, January 31, with Pastor Stacey Moroz officiating.
